The TRUST Sweet Iron Eggbutt Gag Waterford-16 combines the lifting action of an eggbutt gag with a Waterford mouthpiece made of Sweet Iron.
The eggbutt gag encourages the horse to raise its head and is often used for horses that come behind the bit. When you take up the rein the mouthpiece slides up, creating pressure in the corners of the mouth and at the poll. It can be ridden with one or two reins or with pelham straps; with two reins, one goes on the bit ring and the other on a lower ring, so you only use the gag action when you really need it. It isn't suitable for inexperienced riders.
The Waterford mouthpiece is made of several links that move in every direction, which makes it harder for the horse to lean on the bit.
Sweet Iron reacts with moisture in the mouth, creating a natural oxidation that releases a slightly sweet taste. This encourages salivation and a supple, relaxed contact. The typical blue colour gradually turns brownish-grey as it oxidises, which is normal and part of how the material works. Clean it regularly and store it dry.
